- From the Seller: "I found a biography about John Cataldo in the American rifleman magazine from December 1936. Was able to locate an original complete set of magazines for that year. All 12 months with the binder. Also received the factory letter from colt. This pistol was shipped to Robert’s hardware in Utica Ny. Utica is the largest city nearest to Lyons Falls where John Cataldo resided. He most likely placed the order for this colt through the hardware store in 1929 as Utica is the largest city in the area and Roberts hardware was one of the largest retailers in that area. "
From the Collector:
I purchased this colt 38 super government model from Bob Cataldo in Lyons Falls Ny. Bob owned a small gun store in that town which was started by his father John H Cataldo. John Cataldo was a famous competition pistol shooter in the 1920's-1940's. In 1934 a photo and bio of him was published in the Colt Revolver and Automatic Pistols catalog.
This 38 super pistol was owned by him and used in many of his competitions. Bob had shown this gun to me and told me the stories several times over the years. He sold it to me (after a tremendous amount of persuading) sometime around 2011 or 2012. He shipped it to our store here in Winder, Ga from his store up in Lyons Falls Ny. I have retained the shipping box and address label. He included a hand written letter stating that this pistol was shot in many of his father's matches.
I visited Bob in 2012 at his store and took a few photos. Behind the counter he had a large wooden display cabinet with all of his dad's shooting trophies and awards. He had always promised to sell a few of them to me but his sentimental attachment ultimately wouldn't let them go. Unfortunately Bob passed away in 2022 at the age of 93. Bob's shop was a great place to visit and was completely packed to the ceiling with old "stuff". It was a time capsule of merchandise accumulated over the years. He wouldn't discount or lower the price to sell anything. If it was old stock inventory he would just raise the prices to keep them modern. In one of the photos he can be seen in his back room office; the desk and shelves piled high with books and papers. He had a plate that hung on the wall which was used as a target and then glued back together. It read "with 38 revolvers 40 rounds = 66 ft Tupper Lake by John Cataldo oct 7 - 1934". Over a fascinating history for this old gun. The pistol was manufactured in 1929 and has a 4 digit serial number: the first year of production for the Colt 38 super.
